Get Ready for SoMa’s Mardi Gras Parade Saturday

Laissez les bons temps rouler!

Get your tri-colored beads (and appetites) ready for Saturday (March 1) when SoMa’s Mardi Gras Parade rolls through South Main Street in Little Rock.

At noon, the parade will begin at the intersection of South Main and 24th Street with floats and walkers celebrating the Cajun holiday. In addition to the themed parade, Community Bakery will be serving complimentary King Cake before, during and after the parade; tweed-clad riders will convene for the Little Rock Tweed Ride, starting at 11 a.m.; South on Main will have a booth in front of the restaurant, selling andouille sandwiches and King Cake; and Boulevard Bake House and Market will be serving gumbo, muffalettas and King Cakes.

Immediately following the parade, The Root Café will have the judging of their 2nd Annual Beard Growing Contest in The Bernice Garden, 1401 S. Main St., Little Rock. See great prizes for winners in the Fullest Beard, Most Original, Best ‘Burns & ‘Stache Combo categories, as well as lifetime acheivement categories Longest Beard, Best Santa Claus, Best 35 and under and Best Aging Hipster Beard. This year’s guest judges are P. Allen Smith, Renee Shapiro and Arshia Khan.

There is still time to be part of the parade. The good thing is there is no fee to be part of the event and there will be a cash prize for the Best Authentic Mardi Gras float! This is a rain or shine event (snow is another matter). Parade participants need to line up at 11:15 a.m. at Scott Street and 24th. If you are interested in being a parade walker or have a float, call Hillis Schild at (501) 412-3768 or email soma@southsidemain.org with your contact information.
