You’ve finally decided to have that life-changing plastic surgery or aesthetic procedure. Now what? Taking the plunge can be a daunting idea, and although you may think you know what you want done, it is important that you ask questions. Finding the right person to perform your procedure is paramount.
Here are some questions you should ask potential doctors, dentists and licensed aestheticians:
1. Are you board certified in plastic surgery? How frequently do you perform the procedure(s) I am interested in?
2. What can I do before the procedure for better results and a quicker recovery?
3. What are the risks associated with this procedure? Is there a safer alternative I should consider?
4. What is the actual surgery or procedure like? What is the process?
5. When will I begin to see results? What will the recovery be like?
6. When can I go back to my normal routine? Going to the gym, wearing makeup, etc.?
7. How do I best maintain my results? Will I need to follow up with more procedures in the future?

Finding the Right Fit
Not every beauty expert is created equally, and each has his or her own specialty. You should always do your own research and find the experts you are most comfortable with. We asked some of our local experts what sets them apart from other professionals in the industry. Here is our take on some of the things to look for in the expert you may choose to work with:
Aestheticians
Aestheticians are all about skin. A licensed aesthetician typically works in a salon, spa or medical office. Specialized aestheticians are trained in using potent acids, lasers and other equipment for advanced procedures that are available under a physician’s supervision. An advanced aesthetician practices with a state license, a national accreditation or may be a member of an international skincare organization. Explore the ongoing training, past experiences and specialties of the aesthetician you are looking to work with.
Plastic Surgeons
Board certified plastic surgeons have the highest level of knowledge, training and expertise in the art and science of aesthetic and reconstructive surgery. Their goal is to enhance, refine and restore your unique qualities through surgical procedures such as a face lift, breast augmentation and reconstruction, as well as body contouring and non-surgical procedures such as Botox®, fillers and cellulite removal treatments. A plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery has completed extensive plastic surgical training and is qualified to perform reconstructive and aesthetic surgery of the face and entire body. Look for a board certified plastic surgeon who is also a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons as this organization holds board certified plastic surgeons to the highest standards of training, ethics, physician practice and research.
Cosmetic Dentists
If you want to improve your smile, you could see a cosmetic dentist. They perform procedures aimed at creating a positive change to your teeth and smile. Dentists go through four years of college and four years of dental school and also take part in special training programs for cosmetic procedures. Looking for a dentist who is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry will ensure that the dentist is participating in continuing education and has particular credentials.
