First Thea Art Department of 2025 to Feature Jason McCann

Thea Foundation is hosting the first installation of its 2025 Art Department series with local artist and teacher Jason McCann’s exhibit titled “The American Student.”

An opening reception will be held Thursday, Feb. 6, from 5-7:30 p.m. at the Argenta gallery. The exhibit, which features a selection of depictions of the students McCann has taught at Central High School over the last decade, will be on display through Feb. 27.

“The American Student” is a reflection of McCann’s work, specifically his focus on figurative subject matter, as well as architectural and industrial subjects. According to McCann’s website, he uses “expressive paint application and color to capture the energy and spontaneity of his subjects.”

With 24 years of experience teaching students from all backgrounds, McCann captures his students in a way in which, as Thea describes, “their standardized test scores or where their families fall on the median income line are forgotten; They are just kids in class that deserve to have their educational needs fulfilled no matter their ZIP code.”

McCann resides in Maumelle with his wife Melissa and their three children. He teaches art at Little Rock Central High School, the Arkansas Governor’s School and in private group lessons from his studio space. His work has been featured across the U.S. and can be found locally at Boswell Mourot Fine Art. His piece “Yankee T-shirt With Morning Light” appeared on the cover of Little Rock Soirée for the August 2024 Art Issue.
