Artistic Affair: 4 Exhibits to Check Out This Weekend

Before or after the big football game tomorrow (Sept. 7), if you’re interested in taking the artistic route for added fun, we’ve got a few things to check out around central Arkansas:

  1. Last Weekend for “Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Gainsborough: The Treasures of Kenwood House, London” at Arkansas Arts Center, 501 E. Ninth St., Little Rock — Enjoy the Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Gainsborough: The Treasures of Kenwood House, London exhibit before it officially ends Sunday (Sept. 8) at the Arkansas Arts Center. This special exhibition showcases 48 masterpieces from the collection known as the Iveagh Bequest. These magnificent paintings reside at Kenwood House, a neoclassical villa in London.   2. Opening of “Recovery: The World Trade Center Recovery Operation” Exhibit at William F. Laman Library, 2801 Orange St., North Little Rock — Starting today (Sept. 6), the library’s newest exhibit “Recovery: The World Trade Center Recovery Operation” will open in the exhibit hall, showcasing 65 photographs and 56 recovered artifacts, a timeline of events from September 11, 2001, interpretive text panels and an interactive touch screen that contains FBI film of the recovery operations, and sympathy objects from across the world. At 10 a.m. Saturday (Sept. 7), Maureen Mitchell from 9/11 Tribute Center will speak on behalf of her late husband, New York City Fire Department Lieutenant, Paul Mitchell.   3. “From the Vault: Works From the CALS Permanent Collection” at Butler Center for Arkansas Studies, 401 President Clinton Ave., Little Rock — The Central Arkansas Library System (CALS) houses more than just books. Managed by CALS’s Butler Center for Arkansas Studies, the library’s art program also collects and supports artists working and living in Arkansas. On display in the exhibition at the Concordia Gallery are historical paintings by Donald Draper (not from “Mad Men”!), small works on paper by Little Rock’s own visionary artist Arthur Grain, a spectacular sculpture by Mary Cockrill and much more.   4. Opening of “Edge & Goofy” at Gallery 360, 900 S. Rodney Parham Road, Little Rock — The west Little Rock gallery’s new exhibit “Edgy & Goofy” will have an opening reception from 6-9 p.m. tomorrow (Sept. 7), showcasing collages and mixed media works by Amy Edgington and Byron Werner.  Originals and prints will be for sale by two of Little Rock’s most talented cut-ups.
