The event begins with brunch bites and a book signing at 10:30 a.m. During his lecture titled “Decades: A Century of Fashion with Cameron Silver” beginning at 11 a.m., Silver will discuss the timeless trends during the 1900s to 2000s and how these style moments influence us today. Afterward, there will be an H Halston pop-up shop in the AAC lobby at noon thanks to a partnership with Dillard’s Park Plaza. A percentage of the proceeds will benefit the AAC.
Our friends at the AAC were able to ask Silver a few questions before he comes to town on Saturday.
How would you describe your current role?
CS: My current life in fashion is a duality: I own the famous pre-loved luxury vintage clothing store in Los Angeles, Decades. I also serve as fashion director for both H by Halston (which is available exclusively on QVC and I appear several times per week) and H Halston, which is available at Dillard’s, Lord & Taylor and Hudson’s Bay in Canada.
How did you first become interested in fashion?
CS: My parents have always loved to shop and we traveled extensively so we learned a lot of about different cultures by their style. I got the fashion bug quite young!
How does art influence fashion?
CS: Artists and fashion designers have historically collaborated and influenced each other for decades. Think of Yves Saint Laurent and his Mondrian dress or Halston and Warhol prints. Fashion is an art form and the various visual and performing arts regularly embrace fashion.
Are you inspired or influenced by any particular artistic periods, styles or artists?
CS: I have a soft spot for Pre-Raphaelite art. I love the romance of the images and the fashion was always sensual, draped and exotic.
What is your favorite decade of fashion?
CS: Give me the 1970s! This is when American fashion broke through globally and designers like Halston, Bill Blass, Anne Klein and so many others received international recognition and defined a new, modern sportswear aesthetic that still influences designers from all over the world today.
