‘Commanding the Screen’ Film Exhibit Opens at Clinton Center This Month

A new temporary exhibit is set to take over the Clinton Presidential Center beginning next weekend on Saturday, Aug. 17.

“Commanding the Screen: The American Presidency in Film and Television” will give viewers a look into the leading role of the president in American society through cinematic performances of fictional and real-life presidents.

The exhibition invites guests to examine how America’s spirit, values and historical journey are reflected in various depictions of the commander in chief. Original costumes, set pieces, authentic props, design sketches, scripts and other memorabilia from more than 30 movie and television portrayals of the American presidency will also be on display for guests to explore.

“This has been such an enjoyable exhibit to see come to fruition,” says Dr. Jay Barth, director of the William J. Clinton Presidential Library and Museum. “From comedic performances, such as Peter Seller’s remarkable President Merkin Muffley in the classic ‘Dr. Strangelove,’ to more historical portraits, like Daniel Day Lewis’ President Lincoln in the Academy Award-winning ‘Lincoln,’ ‘Commanding the Screen’ captures the leadership, courage, humanity and occasional humor of the commander in chief.”

A collection of featured film watch parties will be held in partnership with the Arkansas Cinema Society, Central Arkansas Library System, Downtown Little Rock Partnership and the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival.

  • “Mars Attacks!” – Sept. 21
  • “Crisis” – Oct. 22
  • TBA – Nov. 3
  • “Dr. Strangelove” – Feb. 1
