The Celebrate! Maya Project, an Arkansas-based nonprofit honoring Maya Angelou, will host its fourth annual FriendRaiser on Thursday, Oct. 4 in Little Rock. The event will take place from 6-8 p.m. at Trapnall Hall.
“Our theme for this year’s FriendRaiser exemplifies the Celebrate! Maya Project’s overall mission,” founder and president of the Celebrate! Maya Project Janis Kearney says. “Since our inception, our primary goals have been to celebrate Maya Angelou’s legacy and find ways to help youth continue their education, find their voices and live their dreams.”
FriendRaiser will include poetry performances by youth poet and spoken word artist Jamee McAdoo and live musical performances by Arkansas singer Bijoux Pighee and the Parkview Arts and Science Magnet High School Jazz Band. There will also be hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction.
The event raises money to provide educational programming related to Angelou and scholarships for high school writers and poets. This year’s theme is “Growing Arkansas Dreams: When you learn, teach. When you get, give.”
Donations of $90 are requested in honor of Angelou’s 90th birthday, which was April 4. The organization will continue to celebrate her milestone birthday throughout 2018. For more information on the Celebrate! Maya Project, visit the organization’s website.
