CARTI and Yoga Warriors Team Up Against Cancer

Now this is what you call a dynamic duo.

CARTI and Donna Terrell’s Yoga Warriors Fighting Colon Cancer are teaming up to offer a new yoga program for those affected by cancer.

“Aside from the physical attack of the disease on the body, cancer can also prey on the emotional and mental wellbeing of patients and caregivers as a result of the heightened stress that often accompanies diagnosis and treatment,” CARTI’s Dr. Diane Wilder said.

“Common yoga principles such as meditation, relaxation and concentration not only help improve the overall mood, health and wellbeing of patients, but can also assist in alleviating cancer-related depression, anxiety and insomnia.”

Under this new partnership, yoga sessions will be held twice monthly, and will be led by oncology-trained certified yoga instructors from the Arkansas Yoga Collective. Classes are free and are open to cancer patients, survivors and their caregivers.

In 2014, FOX16 News anchor Donna Terrell launched Yoga Warriors Fighting Colon Cancer. Since then, she’s hosted regular community-wide events promoting the benefits of yoga for patients after losing her daughter, Queah, to colon cancer in 2011.

“When her cancer went into remission, [Queah] discovered yoga as a way to stay fit, ease stress and clear her mind and body of toxins from chemotherapy,” Terrell told Soirée in 2014. “The belief is that yoga is a relaxing exercise and allows the body to de-stress. The body is able to heal itself much more successfully when stress levels are low.”

The first yoga session is set for 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 6 at the CARTI Cancer Center. Future class are also scheduled for Sept. 20 and Oct. 11 and 25.

Space is limited, so registration is encouraged. Reserve your spot by calling (501) 660-7610 or emailing cgarrett@carti.com.
