The origins of Black History Month may date back 100 years, but his February, the Central Arkansas Library System is keeping the conversation fresh with special events to honor the occasion.
On Wednesday, Feb. 4, the Butler Center’s monthly Legacies & Lunch series will foster the conversation of whether the observation of Black History Month in Arkansas “builds commitment to the history of African Americans,” or whether it “leads to decreased attention to the topic in other months.”
The lecture panel includes community leader Freeman McKindra Sr., Henderson professer John Graves and ASU professor Cherisse Jones-Branch, and will be moderated by David Strickland, manager of the Butler Center.
The next event coincides with Second Friday Art Night on Feb. 13. At the monthly after-hours gallery walk, CALS will premiere a new exhibit called Captured Images: Photographs from the Collection. The collection features a variety of shots from around The Natural State, including artists Bruce Jackson, Alex Leme, Gary Cawood, Benjamin Krain, Thomas Harding and more.
