Central Arkansas Library System’s Butler Center is hosting a special exhibition of the Brewer family’s artworks. The exhibit, titled “A Legacy of Brewers: The Paintings of Nicholas, Adrian and Edwin Brewer — Three Generations of Arkansas Artists,” is on display at the Butler Center Gallery West until Oct. 27.
The exhibition includes paintings by the three generations of the Brewer family. The works consist of portraits and landscapes of people and places from their travels in Arkansas, Arizona, Minnesota, New Mexico and Texas.
The family has a rich history in Arkansas — especially Adrian Brewer and his son Edwin, who was born in Little Rock. Adrian made his living by painting portraits of important local citizens. Edwin attended the Arkansas Arts Museum School and Little Rock University before it became the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. The father-son-duo founded the Arkansas Art League in the 1950s and Edwin was instrumental in creating the Artmobile for the Arkansas Arts Center and advocating for art in schools around the state.
Visitors will be able to learn more about the Brewer family in an illustrated catalog that includes historical and biographical information along with family recollections about the artists.
