Better dust off those bikes and running shoes, because it’s time to start training for this year’s Bike & Hike for ALS set for Sunday, Aug. 26.
The annual challenge route begins with participants setting out from Rockwater Village at 7 a.m. and road biking approximately 18 miles to Pinnacle Mountain State Park. There, participants will leave their bikes in a secure area and change shoes and clothes. Next up is a 3.5-mile hike up the east side of Pinnacle and down the west, then back around on the base trail. Then it’s back on the bikes looping back to Rockwater Village.
You’ll probably need a drink after all that, and you’re in luck: There will be food and beverages (including beer) waiting for you at the finish line.
Bike & Hike continues to celebrate the inspiration behind the event, Lester Vahsholtz, who was diagnosed with ALS in January 2012. Les’s son, Tim, wanted to bring awareness to the disease and honor his father, which resulted in Bike & Hike for ALS. Six years later, the event is still going strong and supporting the ALS Association.
Registration and donation information can be found on the Bike & Hike for ALS website, along with links to order this year’s custom gear.
