To Richard Mays, the “environment” includes everything that impacts our quality of life. He’s spent much of his life attempting to protect not only the air, water and earth, but also the social and human elements that make our lives richer and more secure.
Mays has handled environmental cases protecting the Buffalo River from the impacts of hog-farming, preventing the Corps of Engineers from opening Greers Ferry Lake to unlimited numbers of boat docks, fighting the permitting of coal-fired electrical generating plants, opposing the use of the dangerous herbicide Dicamba and reducing the dangers of PFAS chemicals in our water.
He also fights for social and civic causes, suing the state to nullify the LEARNS Act voucher program diverting public funds to private religious schools, challenging the reapportionment law discriminating against Black voters, suing the state’s attorney general for attempting to overturn the 2020 national general election and the city over neglect of the historic Pike-Fletcher-Terry House. Through it all, Mays remains steadfast in his commitment to justice, equality and a healthier future for all Arkansans.
