Dennia Beard
Dennia Beard State Farm Insurance Agency
When Dennia Beard was 11 years old, her house burned to the ground. She was at camp when it happened, and what she had with her was all she now owned. Her family had lost everything. “I am not sure what we would have done without an existing homeowners policy in force,” she says. “My superhero dad built a new one and we moved into our brand new home within six months. This is where my passion for insurance began.” This experience, and the many more that followed, curated a love for working with families to solve problems, to help manage the risks of everyday life and recover from the unexpected.

What’s a typical day look like?
The morning begins with briefing the leadership staff and planning for the day. After a quick huddle with the entire team, there are client meetings and calls. My day always ends with a quick end-of-day review.
What type of coverage do consumers often forget to purchase?
Disability coverage. Many underestimate the likelihood of becoming disabled and being unable to work. Disability insurance provides income replacement in such cases, but is often overlooked because people think it is covered elsewhere. Typically, it isn’t.
Is it better to have a high insurance premium and low deductible or vice versa?
Choosing between a high insurance premium with a low deductible (or the opposite) depends on several factors, including your financial situation, tolerance for risk and your propensity to use the coverage.
How often should coverage be reviewed?
Insurance policies should be reviewed at least annually, but there are specific times and events — like a birth, marriage, divorce or retirement — that should prompt a review to ensure you have adequate coverage and are not overpaying.
When should companies consider coverage for employment practices or cyber liability?
Immediately. I have had too many friends who own businesses that needed this coverage and it wasn’t in place. This is another example of assuming something is covered by your general business policy when it is not.
