The newest trend on the fitness scene combines the recent resurgence of two ancient practices: craft beer and yoga. And thanks to yoga instructor Valerie Talburt and Rebel Kettle Brewing Co., you can now make the practice part of your weekend routine.
The concept is simple: For $10, participants get a one-hour yoga session and a cold glass of Rebel Kettle beer to sip while you flow. Last week was the event’s debut, wherein about 50 yogis spread their mats across the brewery’s grassy, fenced-in yard.
The idea began with Talburt’s friends sending her stories on social media of beer yoga classes popping up across the country. After her research found no one offering beer yoga in Little Rock, she reached out to Rebel Kettle. Brewer John Lee liked the idea, and soon the wheels were in motion.
As one might assume, this is not your average yoga class. For one, you can expect a playlist full of rap and classic rock to help keep the energy high.
“It’s fun. It’s all about a good time,” Talburt says. “We do a regular vinyasa flow, but I make sure to work in at least one pose holding your beer and encourage beer breaks. Child’s pose? Beer break.”
Talburt also stresses that this is a class for all levels of expertise, where everyone is welcome and encouraged. In fact, it’s a core concept of the series.
“A few of my goals with beer yoga are to create a fun way in which to socialize for current yogis, as well as a relaxed environment for folks who may want to try yoga, but find themselves intimidated by the more traditional studio style,” Talburt says.
The next beer yoga class will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 17. A few pro tips: Show up early (it’s first come, first served) and bring a mat, a towel, sunscreen and water. The space can accommodate about 100 yogis, or 50 if weather causes the class to move inside.
