Ballet Arkansas is spreading the love for art, dance and Little Rock this February.
On the heels of its holiday “Nutcracker” production, the troupe will bring the iconic story of “Romeo & Juliet” to the Robinson Center Stage accompanied by the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra on Feb. 14-16.
The classic tale of forbidden love and destiny will sweep away audiences with stunning choreography, elaborate costumes and a community cast of more than 100 performers.
“’Romeo & Juliet’ is not just a paramount production for Arkansas audiences to enjoy — it represents the start of our love story,” says Michael Fothergill, executive and artistic director of Ballet Arkansas, who met his wife and now-associate artistic director Catherine while the two were cast in the title roles of “Romeo & Juliet” with the Alabama Ballet in 2014. Their connection deepened during rehearsals, and they became engaged a year later. This season is extra special as the directors welcomed their son into the world in November.
“This ballet is perfect for those who love Prokofiev’s timeless score, dramatic storytelling and dancing filled with power and depth,” he says. “Ironically, it’s also ideal for anyone who loathes Valentine’s Day and wants to see the star-crossed lovers meet their tragic end.”
In preparation for the upcoming “Romeo & Juliet” production, Ballet Arkansas is asking Arkansans to share their love stories on social media for a chance to win a special selection of sweet gifts.
By sharing your personal love story online, one lucky couple will win a bottle of fine wine, a signed cast poster, two complimentary tickets to the Valentine’s Day performance of “Romeo & Juliet” on February 14 at 7:30 p.m. and an exclusive backstage tour.
To enter, contestants must post a photo of themselves with their loved one on Facebook or Instagram, share their love story, tag Ballet Arkansas and use the hashtag #LRLovestory. Contestants must also reside within Little Rock city limits.
