Todd Price, outreach director for CareLink, shares his insight on some of the most-asked questions from caregivers, including tough conversations, self-care and when to call in backup.
How do I know when it’s time to step in and help my aging parent with daily activities?
TP: Look for signs like missed medications, difficulty with daily tasks or changes in mood or behavior. Start by gently asking if they need help and observe their ability to manage on their own. Offering support early can make it easier to prevent bigger issues down the road.
My parents refuse to accept help at home. How can I introduce services without overwhelming them?
TP: It’s important to introduce the topic with patience and understanding, framing services as support to enhance independence, not replace it. If your loved one is hesitant, consider a trial period where they can experience assistance without permanent commitment. Ultimately, be prepared for gradual steps toward the decision rather than an immediate solution.
I’m struggling to balance caregiving with my job and family life. How can I avoid burnout?
TP: Taking breaks is essential. Consider asking family for help or exploring services like respite care to give you time to recharge. Support groups and counseling can help you cope emotionally. Remember that you can’t pour from an empty cup. It’s important to maintain your well-being so you can care for your loved one long term.
