“I like this piece because it has some of the qualities of magic realism, which I strive for in my landscapes,” Montgomery says. “I think it seems a little mysterious, with the gnarled trees and crescent moon creating a sense of something magical.
“I chose the title as a reference to an old Cat Stevens song because I enjoy referencing song titles in my work, and in this image I found myself wondering what might be down the road and over the hill.”
ARTIST BIO
Kirk Montgomery was born in Birmingham, Alabama, and has lived in Little Rock since 1994. He studied at the Memphis Academy of Art, Atlanta College of Art and University of Alabama-Birmingham, and received his masters of fine art in painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art.
Montgomery worked as a newspaper artist and editor at the Birmingham Post Herald, Cincinnati Post, Philadelphia Inquirer and Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. While working at the Democrat-Gazette, he wrote numerous articles on art, covering major art exhibitions at Crystal Bridges and the Arkansas Arts Center (now the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts).
As a newspaper artist, Montgomery won many awards for design, photo-illustration and graphics. He retired from the newspaper business in 2019 and has since dedicated his time to his own artwork.
His work has been featured in numerous local galleries, including solo and “Stop the Presses” newspaper art shows at Cantrell Gallery in Little Rock and Kollective Coffee Shop in Hot Springs, as well as group shows at Mugs Coffee Shop in North Little Rock.
Montgomery lives in Little Rock with his wife Louise. He has two sons, Will and Luke, and three grandkids, with one more on the way.
