WOMEN TO WATCH

Regan Gruber Moffitt

Vice President
Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation

The Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation (WRF) shares Governor Rockefeller’s vision of a thriving and prosperous Arkansas that benefits all Arkansans. I joined WRF in 2009. My career has taken me from the classroom to the statehouse to philanthropy. At WRF, I lead initiatives to increase the income and assets of all Arkansans and to bring more philanthropic resources to support change in the state, especially for educational equity.

PRESSING QUESTIONS

How I knew this was my passion:

Since I was very young, I’ve wanted to “change the world.” The meaning of that phrase has evolved as I’ve realized the power of philanthropy as a tool for change and understand that big change often starts in small places.

Best advice I ever received:

“Did you do your best?” I remember my dad asking me as a kid. I often use that question as a reminder of my obligation to give everything I have to things that matter and to be forgiving of failure.

Best career moment so far:

Nearly 20 years ago, I taught eighth grade math to recent immigrant students through Teach for America. Those students continue to inspire me with their accomplishments and drive my passion for educational equity.

If I could lunch with any woman, it would be:

I went to an all-women’s college, Wellesley. During my time there, I was surrounded with hundreds of smart, ambitious, change-making women. If I could, I would transport myself back in time to college to eat dining hall fare with them.

I wish I knew how to:

Relax. Sitting still is not my strong suit, and that works out well since my life keeps me moving. I love practicing yoga because it is an opportunity for me to meditate in motion.

Biggest challenges in my career:

Balancing work, kids, family, friends and self often feels impossible. I tried and failed. Instead, I decided balance wasn’t for me. Work-life blend is the only way to accomplish what I want to at home and at the office.

How I define success:

Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote the definition of success that I live by. It describes success as laughing often, appreciating beauty, finding the best in others and leaving the world better than you found it.

My role model:

My motivation to change the world started at home. My mom taught me early and often what it means to love and fully commit to both your family and your community. She’s blazed a trail for women leaders in Arkansas.
