SPONSORED: Creating Community Through Art & Mental Health Recovery

Presented by:

Birch Tree Communities has spent decades quietly transforming lives across Arkansas by helping adults living with serious and persistent mental illness build independence, dignity and connection. Founded in 1989, the nonprofit behavioral health program provides care and supportive housing designed to guide members toward what it calls “a satisfying life in the community,” a goal defined individually by each person it serves.

At the heart of Birch Tree’s work are its guiding “intentions,” or values that shape daily interactions and long-term outcomes alike. The organization emphasizes patience, justice and non-discrimination while striving to create an environment where dreams can be encouraged and pursued. These principles foster a recovery-focused atmosphere in which members feel cared for, valued and empowered.

Birch Tree offers a full continuum of clinical, rehabilitative and enrichment services that support members on their path back into the community. Programming includes therapy, medication management, rehabilitative treatment, transportation and supportive housing, as well as life-enriching opportunities such as expressive arts. These services equip members with skills and confidence needed for greater independence, for progress that is reflected in outcomes. In 2025, 74% of members discharged from the program transitioned to independent living settings.

Creative expression plays a particularly meaningful role in that journey. Birch Tree’s expressive arts program provides members with an outlet to communicate emotions, develop coping skills and build self-confidence. Led by a full-time art director who travels among the organization’s 12 branches, the program offers instruction and exploration across disciplines — from painting and ceramics to creative writing, jewelry making and even African drumming. Beyond therapeutic benefits, artistic engagement helps bridge connections with the broader community, challenging stigma surrounding mental illness.

That connection takes center stage each year at the Birch Tree Communities Expressions Arts Show. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the event will embrace a Roaring ’20s theme on April 9 at the historic Albert Pike Masonic Center in downtown Little Rock. Guests can expect an exhibition and sale of artwork created by members, along with entertainment, refreshments, speakers and a live auction. For participating artists, seeing their work appreciated — and sometimes purchased — can be both affirming and transformative.

Proceeds from art sales go directly to the creators, supporting their personal independence, while sponsorships and ticket revenue help sustain the expressive arts program year-round.

Ultimately, the event is about more than art. It provides an opportunity for community members to engage directly with Birch Tree participants, learn about mental health recovery and witness resilience firsthand. Organizers hope attendees leave inspired by the creativity and perseverance on display and motivated to continue supporting the mission.

Readers can attend the show, purchase artwork or make donations through Birch Tree’s website, including contributions designated for arts programming, which covers essential care not supported by Medicaid. Through involvement and awareness, the community plays a vital role in ensuring Birch Tree continues to help individuals build meaningful, self-defined lives.
