Agency Services Manager, Arkansas Foodbank
HOW I KNEW THIS WAS MY PASSION
When I began working at a local food pantry, food insecurity suddenly had a name. Rather than just being an unknown, it was Mary, Robert and John. They weren’t strangers anymore, they were family. I had to help them.
BIGGEST CHALLENGES IN MY CAREER
My biggest challenge is helping people break societal stereotypes and maintain dignity even in the midst of trying times. People are food insecure because they don’t have enough food on their tables, not because they don’t have hopes and dreams.
WHAT KEEPS ME COMING BACK TO MY JOB EVERY DAY
I leave work every day knowing I had the opportunity to truly listen to someone’s story, to help parents know their children will have food to eat tomorrow and I took small steps to help someone face another day.
BEST ADVICE I EVER RECEIVED
Maya Angelou once said, “They may not remember the things you did, and they may not remember the words you said, but they will never forget the way you made them feel.” I try to live it every day.
ONE THING I WISH PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT MY COMPANY
The Arkansas Foodbank isn’t a hand out, it is a hand up. By giving dignity to everyone and helping them navigate all the issues they are facing, we are giving people food on the table today and hope for tomorrow.
