Even if you feel good and aren’t due for a pap test, it’s essential to have an annual wellness visit. This routine visit is a chance for you and your OB/GYN to discuss your gynecologic and reproductive health, including any questions or concerns you have.
Feel vulnerable when you put on the paper gown? Here are a few OB/GYN insights to put your mind at ease.
1. It’s a no-judgment zone. Whatever your gynecologic question or concern, your doctor has likely heard it before. “The annual visit is a safe environment where you can feel comfortable discussing questions or concerns with your provider,” says Dr. Lisa Newton, a Mercy Clinic OB/GYN in Fort Smith. “Remember, we care for women just like you every day and want you to feel secure in communicating with us.”
2. You can bring up other health issues. Let your OB/GYN know if you’re dealing with depression, urinary incontinence, weight gain or other health issues. They may be able to treat it or recommend a specialist.
3. Your reproductive plans matter. Whether you’re planning for a pregnancy or not quite ready for one, let your OB/GYN know your plans. They can share tips for conceiving or avoiding pregnancy, and they’ll let you know how age affects your fertility.
4. Yes, you still need to be seen after a hysterectomy. Having a hysterectomy doesn’t mean your wellness visits stop. You still need cervical cancer screenings, medical breast exams and general gynecologic care.
5. Don’t stop care during the pandemic. Continue to get the care you need by scheduling your wellness visit. You may need to wear a mask or follow other safety guidelines at the clinic, and some clinics even offer video visits with physician approval.
If you haven’t had your wellness visit in the past year, it’s time to schedule it.
“Women’s health care needs evolve throughout their lives,” Dr. Newton says. “A wellness visit is one of the most important steps you can take to stay healthy at any age.”
