The Firecracker Fast 5K has become a tradition for many runners in the region over the years as an annual Independence Day event. Put on by the folks at Fleet Feet Sports Easy Runner, this regional road race known for being “quick and dirty” marks its 40th year on Monday, July 4.
The course winds down Kavanaugh and Van Buren, ending at the War Memorial Stadium, and has been dubbed one of the fastest by Runner’s World magazine. The race is point to point, but you don’t have to worry about having someone waiting at the finish line — there will be trolleys to take you back to your vehicle.
And top competitors won’t walk away empty handed. The Firecracker Fast 5K offers age division awards, completion medals for kids 12 and under, actual firecrackers for the first 50 men and 50 women finishers, $300 for the fastest man and woman and a whopping $500 await you if you can set a new course record. (For reference, those records are held by Ruben Reina at 13:26 and Collette Murphy at 15:23)
It all kicks off at 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of University and Kavanaugh. There are still plenty of spots available, so if you want to start your Fourth off with a bang, click here to sign up.
